The Next Big Thing (part 1)

Well it’s finally happened and I’ve finally made the move to Sydney. Hell, I’ve even updated my GeoTags in this webpage, now that is so Hardcore Geek™!

Sunday was my last day of work and one of the longest days I have ever worked in my entire life. I did practically nothing all day except wander around and get interrogated by everyone about what my plans were once I moved. I got really sick of admitting saying I was flying by the seat of my pants and winging it, but even more sick of being told it was a stupid thing to do.

Finish work at 4:30pm and fly to Sydney at 6:25pm. I didn’t want to waste any time, I’ve been too unhappy here for too long and getting to Sydney was really my only priority at the moment. I said goodbye to my family at the airport, stepped onto the plane and flew into my new life.

Walking into the airport I notice a sign that says, “One way - do not turn back.” I find it amusing that I have visited Sydney nearly every week or two for months now and I have never noticed this sign before. It takes significance for the first time and serves as the first thing all day that told me I was doing the right thing.

In the airport I see Claire smiling at me, she is absolutely exhausted from filming and she walks over and gives me a tired hug. We’re both exhausted, but still excited, so it’s a bit mixed from both of us. We jump the first available cab and hit it straight to my new house and my new life.

Driving into my suburb for the first time is a little scary. It’s not a bad area (or a great area), but the houses look daunting at night and as though they are leaning in on me and suffocating me.

As we near my new home for the first time the reality of the fact I have never seen the apartment block sets in and I worry that it’s going to be a dump. Claire jokes with me and points to a particularly crummy looking set of apartments and says, “maybe that is yours!” It’s amusing, but my apartments that are opposite are really nice! In fact it’s absolutely perfect, it’s amazing! It looks like something out of an O.C./90210 episode, surrounded by palm trees and brand new rendering, much better than I expected!

I drag my bags upstairs and say hello to Rachel and Nikki, two of my housemates. I pile into my room and look around terrified. I really hadn’t considered the unpacking of everything, I needed to unpack so many boxes and build my bed before I could even do anything. A few hours later after a lot of effort, chinese good and building I am sound asleep, dreaming of the days to come in my new life.

Of Macs and Sydney

So much has been happening lately that I have barely had any time to do any writing, but hopefully I will do a little more over the coming months and keep the site up to date with photos and writing of what’s happening.

The MacBook arrived and even after so many weeks of taking it everywhere I go (except the shower) I am still totally in love with it. When I originally bought it I had images of me using a lot of Windows on it once I set up Boot Camp, however I haven’t even bothered installing it and I am suffering Hardcore OS X Lust™!

That’s the unimportant stuff, now for what has really been happening! I quit my job! That’s right folks Mitch is officially unemployed and moving to Sydney! I’ve done this for so many reasons, not the least of which is to be closer to Claire.

Living in the country has really killed me these last few years and I think the move to the city will do me a lot of good. I’ve always loved Sydney and always said it would be my home, so moving there just feels right.

I am moving into the Inner West area into a suburb called Ashfield, but the best part is who I am moving in with. I am really excited because I am moving in with Mark again, one of my best mates, a guy I’d marry if it weren’t against gods’ will! I am also moving in with his girlfriend Rachel who is like a sister to me, and Mark’s sister who is actually a sister to Mark.

I will be looking for work in either sales or IT, but mostly hoping for IT jobs since I really can’t take on another job where I’ll be required to work weekends. I really want my life back when I move to Sydney, I really want to be able to have my weekends for relaxing and being sociable.

More to come on the packing, moving, crying, laughing and Mac’ing in the near future, but for now it is bed time!
